There’s something absolutely magical about a Victorian Christmas.  With the Thomasville Victorian Christmas 2013 celebration, you’ll quickly see why.  Carolers dressed in their 19th century holiday finery stroll around downtown Thomasville singing traditional Christmas classics.  Take a carriage ride with horses decked out in twinkling lights, making music with their jingle bells.  Guests may even find themselves face to face with live street performances throughout the downtown area.

One of the favorites of every Thomasville townie is the living Nativity that tells the story of Christ’s birth more than 2000 years ago.  The Victorian Village, Victorian Museum and Winter Wonderland for the kids helps solidify the specialness of this time of year.  You can download a complete schedule of events here.

Lost Creek Forest Autumn Tour 2013

Thomasville Candlelight Vigil

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence first observed a Day of Unity in support of the victims of domestic violence back in October of 1981.  Now, 32 years later, the entire month of October has officially been declared National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  To mark the occasion and show support for those affected, a silent march and Thomasville candlelight vigil will be held this Thursday, October 17th.

The Thomasville candlelight vigil will start with a silent march concluding at St Thomas Episcopal Church.  The vigil is sponsored by Thomasville’s Halcyon Home, a shelter for battered women and their children.  The Halcyon Home has been providing services and shelter for victims of domestic violence in the Thomasville area for 16 years now.  For more information about Halcyon Home or the Thomasville candlelight vigil, please call Chris Marsh at (229) 226-6682 or send her an email.

Show support for victims of domestic violence everywhere.  Attend the Thomasville candlelight vigil this Thursday evening.  Let the perpetrators of this horrible crime know that we are watching.  And let the victims and their families know that they don’t have to suffer any longer.  There is a safe place to go…Halcyon Home.

Thomasville Deep South Fair

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that fair season has ended.  That crisp autumn weather nipping at your ears is telling you that it’s time for the Thomasville Deep South Fair to begin.  In fact, tomorrow night, the Thomasville Fairgrounds will be filled with the smells of cotton candy, hot dogs and dust (the demolition derby is back).

The Thomasville Exchange Club will be presenting the Thomasville Deep South Fair at the fairgrounds for the 56th year.  The demolition derby, always a fan favorite, will be in full force on Tuesday and Thursday night.  The purse for the winners this year will be bigger than ever.

But there’s more to the Thomasville Deep South Fair than crashing cars.  Visitors will have the opportunity to chow down on standard fair food: hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, funnel cakes, etc provided by a number of food vendors on-site.  Modern Midways is providing the carnival rides and other midway attractions.  A petting zoo provides an up close and personal look at area farm animals.  And the local 4-H Club will be holding a Goat Show on Wednesday.  Arts and crafts and commercial exhibits will be set up on the Thomasville Fairgrounds for guests to peruse.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Rally in Thomasville

Domestic violence is, unfortunately, a prevalent problem in America today.  When we see signs of domestic violence and don’t say anything, we help create an environment in which it can thrive.  October has officially been named Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  To show support for victims and advance awareness, come join the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Rally in Thomasville this Friday, October 4th.

The Halcyon Home, a home for battered women and their children, will be sponsoring the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Rally in Thomasville.  Since October 1997, the non-profit Halcyon Home has provided 24 hour crisis intervention, group treatment, a crisis hotline, advocacy services and daycare for victims of domestic violence, among other services.  The Halcyon Home in Thomasville is the only shelter in Southwest Georgia.

Thomasville Great Gatsby Gambler Evening

For the rich in America, the “roaring 20’s” was the age of decadence.  Nothing epitomizes this more than F. Thomasville Stars and Stripes 6K Patriot Walk/Run

I am confident that anyone who was at least 10 years old at the time remembers the events of September 11, 2001.  This Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of that vicious terrorist attack on our country, a day we now call Patriot Day.  To honor those we lost that day as well as the men and women who have fought for freedom on our behalf, Thomas County will be holding its very first Thomasville Stars and Stripes 6K Patriot Walk/Run this Saturday, September 14, 2013.

What: Thomasville Stars and Stripes 6K Patriot Walk/Run
Where: Myrtlewood Plantation, Campbell St
When: September 14, 2013 at 8am
Cost: $15 to $25

As the name implies, participants in the Thomasville Stars and Stripes 6K Patriot Walk/Run can either walk the 6K (3.73 miles) or run it if you would like.  After the walk/run, prizes will be awarded and fun activities are planned.  All money raised from the Thomasville Stars and Stripes 6K Patriot Walk/Run will benefit the Senior Chief Dave “Blake” Mclendon Scholarship Fund.  Senior Chief Mclendon was a Thomasville native who enrolled in the Navy in July 1998.  He eventually became a highly decorated Senior Chief Cryptologic Technician with the Navy.  In September 2010, at the age of 30, Senior Chief Mclendon died in a helicopter crash during combat in Afghanistan.

The scholarship that bears Senior Chief Dave “Blake” Mclendon’s name is available for any Thomas County High School student who is either graduating from or will graduate soon with at least a 2.5 GPA.  They must also have enrolled in or plan to enroll in a US college or university for their secondary education.  To apply, please visit the Community Foundation of South Georgia website.

Thomasville Flaunt 2013

Reading to a child helps them develop a thirst for knowledge that lasts a lifetime.  Studies have shown that children who are read to from an early age develop their language skills quicker, avoid future learning problems and are more ready to begin school than those children who are not read to.  Because reading is such a fundamental necessity in the education of a child, Thomasville Center for the Arts has partnered up with the Thomas County Public Library system to bring Thomasville Flaunt 2013 to life.

The theme of Thomasville Flaunt 2013 this year is One Book: Time to Read Together.  More than 60 local Thomasville artists will put together their interpretations of a mystery book to present to the public in Downtown Thomasville throughout the month.  The mystery book chosen for this year will be unveiled at a special Opening Night Party on Friday, September 6th, 2013 from 6pm to 7:30pm.  The party will be held at the Grassroots Cafe and includes entertainment and a silent auction.  Tickets are just $25 each.

The One Book project is the Thomasville Center for the Arts’ effort to encourage the interaction of community members through a common love of reading.  Buy your tickets for the Thomasville Flaunt 2013 opening night party now.  Celebrate your love of the written word with others in the Thomasville community who share your passion.

Thomasville Bingo
