Thomasville Flaunt 2013

Reading to a child helps them develop a thirst for knowledge that lasts a lifetime.  Studies have shown that children who are read to from an early age develop their language skills quicker, avoid future learning problems and are more ready to begin school than those children who are not read to.  Because reading is such a fundamental necessity in the education of a child, Thomasville Center for the Arts has partnered up with the Thomas County Public Library system to bring Thomasville Flaunt 2013 to life.

The theme of Thomasville Flaunt 2013 this year is One Book: Time to Read Together.  More than 60 local Thomasville artists will put together their interpretations of a mystery book to present to the public in Downtown Thomasville throughout the month.  The mystery book chosen for this year will be unveiled at a special Opening Night Party on Friday, September 6th, 2013 from 6pm to 7:30pm.  The party will be held at the Grassroots Cafe and includes entertainment and a silent auction.  Tickets are just $25 each.

The One Book project is the Thomasville Center for the Arts’ effort to encourage the interaction of community members through a common love of reading.  Buy your tickets for the Thomasville Flaunt 2013 opening night party now.  Celebrate your love of the written word with others in the Thomasville community who share your passion.

Thomasville Gold Bow for the CURE

To kick off National Childhood Cancer Awareness month (September), the local Thomasville area CURE team will be holding their Thomasville Gold Bow for the CURE sale.  From 10am to 4pm this Saturday, August 31st, 2013, the CURE Childhood Cancer team will be selling gold bows for just $10 each.  They will be working in conjunction with Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help raise money to fund research to find a cure for and support for families of children with cancer.

Back in 1975, Dr. Abdel Ragab (Emory University’s first pediatric oncologist in Atlanta) discovered a large need for research into childhood cancers.  He also realized that the support for families with sick children was severely lacking.  That’s when he decided to gather together these parents and create CURE Childhood Cancer.  Over the years, CURE has advanced from raising money for equipment in just the Atlanta area to helping fund research and set up support systems throughout the United States.

Both CURE Childhood Cancer and Alex’s Lemonade Stand will be set up along Broad Street in Thomasville from 10am to 4pm.  All money raised from the Thomasville Gold Bow for the CURE sale and Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Saturday, August 31, 2013 will go directly to funding research to find a cure for all childhood cancers.  Please make it a point to come to Broad Street to show your support.  For more information, please call Sharon Johnson at (229) 226-6927 or send her an email.  With your help, a cure for childhood cancer isn’t too far away.

Whet Your Palette in Thomasville

Are you an artistic type?  Do you wish you were more artistic but don’t know how to get started?  Whet your Palette in Thomasville this Thursday, August 15th.  It’s a fun, friendly way to socialize and be creative.

What: Whet Your Palette
Where: Studio 209 (209 w Remington Ave)

Thomasville Center for the Arts sponsors Whet Your Palette in Thomasville.  Bring your friends and favorite drinks/refreshments to Studio 209 and they will provide your canvas, paint, brushes and a step-by-step guide.  This Thursday, Whet Your Palette in Thomasville will be teaching students how to create a beachy silhouetted sunset…perfect for the end of summer, don’t you think?  With a professional to guide you, you’ll get those creative juices flowing in no time at all!

Thomasville Bingo

B-6.  I-24.  N-33.  G-58.  O-72.  BINGO!  It’s not just for old blue-haired ladies anymore, folks.  If you enjoy having fun, come to Thomasville Bingo every Thursday evening.

The Kouncil Club of Thomasville is a local non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to raise money for local Thomasville charities.  You can help them in their fundraising efforts by coming to St Augustine Catholic Church, located at 211 N Pinetree Blvd, every Thursday evening.  The doors open at 5pm, with an Early Bird Bingo set to begin at 5:45 and regular Bingo starting at 6:45pm.  There is a snack bar on-site to serve tasty treats for patrons.  Money raised will go towards helping local Thomasville charities throughout the year.
